@zaichishka Your book is on my list too! Someday I will become cultured! 😅

#NowReading2021 “Predator at the Chessboard” by Ward Farnsworth, available online at chesstactics.org. Still on my chess kick! ♟ Reading with a nice loose Assam and some baumkuchen picked up in Fukuoka.

#NowReading2021 “The Irish Buddhist: The Forgotten Monk who Faced Down the British Empire” by all @DhammalokaU. Not imbibing any coffee, for obvious reasons 🛀

Pretty much devoured this book, just like the show! Thoughts below 👇 goodreads.com/review/show/3680263872

Decided to post newly started books here as well as on Goodreads. Using the format I learned from @FilmEssaying, but since cafés are very limited on Iki, I won’t be able to intro you to many cool Japanese coffee joints. Mainly books!

Although this is the first new book of the year, I still have a couple unfinished from last year. @sstrangio’s “In the Dragon’s Shadow” and @AntonyJohnston’s “Exphoria Code”

I need to catch up on my #NowReading2021. In May, with my sudden departure from Japan looming, I started listening to “The Emperor of All Maladies” by Siddhartha Mukherjee. I finished it just 4 days before my dad passed away from metastatic lung cancer goodreads.com/book/show/27214070

In June I read an intriguing little book by one of my teacher’s Luong Por Sona called “Life is a near Death Experience.” It helped me put some things into perspective. #NowReading2021 goodreads.com/book/show/58036845

Since then things have been pretty hectic, so I have been actually catching up on podcasts (including Dan Carlin’s latest 6 hour delve into the atomic bombings) and not doing as much book reading as I would like.

#NowReading2021 “The Art of Emptiness” by master potter Sakaida Kakiemon XIV for a @BooksOnAsia review. Enjoying with a pourover in a mug I painted while visiting Kakiemon’s hometown of Arita. Mad respect for pottery artists after (badly) attempting it myself 😅
-
#NowReading2021 “Buddhism and Modernity: Sources from Nineteenth-Century Japan” edited by Orion Klautau and Hans Martin Krämer and published by @UHPRESSNEWS. Got my review copy and a nice hand drip. I have been looking forward to this one! Paperback to release in Oct.
-
#NowReading2021 “Monks in Motion: Buddhism and Modernity Across the South China Sea” by @jackmtchia I’ve been waiting to get into this one for a while!
-
#NowReading2021 "Places" by Jakuchō Setouchi This was just released by @UHPRESSNEWS. She is a very powerful personality with a pretty wild life. Looking forward to see how this reads compared to the regular Buddhist fare I read 😅
-
#NowReading2021 Just finished “The Rise of Modern Japan” a short Great Courses lecture series from @MarkRavina. It’s a really dense history of Japan in the post-war, right up to Covid. Wish it was a series, since I’d love to be caught up on a bunch of countries like this.

#NowReading2021 Just finished “Three Tigers, One Mountain” by Michael Booth. This was my 40th book of the year, completing my Goodreads challenge with just a few days to spare! 🎊 goodreads.com/user_challenges/26033735
