    1. A closeup of the Dainichi Nyorai which takes center stage. Local legend is that sometime in the last 800 years, the head fell perfectly upright on the ground where it sat until they put it back on. You can see the seam across his neck. @chadkoh/1385828825485832193

More details of the Usuki Stone Buddhas. See how the bottom of their bodies are eaten away? MOSS! That is one reason why each of the cliff faces is now roofed with shutters for climate control. Q: Looking L and R of the main Dainichi, why the difference? ⬛ 🤷‍♂️ 🟩

A: LAZERS! Well, technically ultraviolet rays. The restoration team has treated one side with a ray which destroys the moss but not the integrity of the stone. The other is scheduled for later this year.

Did I mention that the Usuki Stone Buddhas are in this super-cute little valley? Here is the view that Dainichi Nyorai sees. Folklore says the Buddhas were carved in memoriam of a much beloved “Princess Hannya” who died a tragic death at 19. See the ❤️? That’s new obviously 😁
