Decided to post newly started books here as well as on Goodreads. Using the format I learned from @FilmEssaying, but since cafés are very limited on Iki, I won’t be able to intro you to many cool Japanese coffee joints. Mainly books!

Although this is the first new book of the year, I still have a couple unfinished from last year. @sstrangio’s “In the Dragon’s Shadow” and @AntonyJohnston’s “Exphoria Code”

I need to catch up on my #NowReading2021. In May, with my sudden departure from Japan looming, I started listening to “The Emperor of All Maladies” by Siddhartha Mukherjee. I finished it just 4 days before my dad passed away from metastatic lung cancer goodreads.com/book/show/27214070

In June I read an intriguing little book by one of my teacher’s Luong Por Sona called “Life is a near Death Experience.” It helped me put some things into perspective. #NowReading2021 goodreads.com/book/show/58036845

Since then things have been pretty hectic, so I have been actually catching up on podcasts (including Dan Carlin’s latest 6 hour delve into the atomic bombings) and not doing as much book reading as I would like.

But I am back on the #NowReading2021 bandwagon. It is 3am and I am suffering from stuffed sinuses, drinking NeoCitron and listening to “A Concise History of Japan” by Brett L Walker while I breathe in steam under a towel. 🤧🧖‍♂️

#NowReading2021 “The Art of Emptiness” by master potter Sakaida Kakiemon XIV for a @BooksOnAsia review. Enjoying with a pourover in a mug I painted while visiting Kakiemon’s hometown of Arita. Mad respect for pottery artists after (badly) attempting it myself 😅

#NowReading2021 “Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism” by Benedict Anderson. A classic of the field. It has a bright cover so…. sunflowers? Also trying out a new Sanpelle flavour.

Also #NowReading2021 “Maritime Asia vs. Continental Asia: National Strategies in a Region of Change” by the eminent professor Takashi Shiraishi. I started reading it under my deck sail so I could get more of a shanty feel. I must report that there is no rum 🍹on this deck. 🙅‍♂️

#NowReading2021 “Piranesi” by Susanna Clarke. Huge, huge fan of Strange & Norrell, but I waited for the right mood before I picked this up: a little lost and looking for wonders. I know nothing about it, so no spoilers! (BTW this is read by Chiwetel Ejiofor, one of my favs!)

Catching up on my #NowReading2021 Zadie Smith’s “Grand Union Stories” The Teaching Company’s lectures on Buddhism by David Eckel (a relisten) “The Shogun’s last Samurai Corps” by Romulus Hillsborough which so far is pretty insane.

#NowReading2021 Was looking up my fav authors for some writing inspiration and found these short books, one on losing a father & one on fatherhood. Listening as I contemplate the loss of my own father. Really striking how different people react.

#NowReading2021 Just finished “The Rise of Modern Japan” a short Great Courses lecture series from @MarkRavina. It’s a really dense history of Japan in the post-war, right up to Covid. Wish it was a series, since I’d love to be caught up on a bunch of countries like this.

#NowReading2021 Continuing on the theme of short explainers of national development, I listened to “Korea: A Very Short Introduction” by Michael J Seth which gave me a better sense of the periodization of the two Koreas, especially during the Joseon up to the modern period.
